There is a class of art that
falls somewhere between graphic design, on the high end of the scale, and
bathroom wall scribblings of male and female genitalia on the
low end. That art is found on the shelves at your local video store.
The shelves are filled with drawings of bikini clad babes and gun brandishing
studs. The images clutter our eyes as we seek out something, anything
to rent other than White Trash Beach Party on the Haunted Lake Part
Six. The job of the Low Budget Artist is too make you cease
your search for The Killing and take home the dialogue sparse
Animal
House rip-off in your hands. These artists must make you
settle for less with a stunning visual display both representative of the
film, and more importantly, representative of what you want out of a movie.
Artists of this ilk truly seek to appeal to the lowest common denominator,
to the prurient interests. Sadly, this artistic movement is on the
wane as fewer companies are feeling the need to hire illustrators for video
box covers when they can snatch a still shot from the film's production
and throw it on the box.
These pages have taken it upon themselves to delve into this field of art, critiquing the art itself as well as the psychology at work in both the artists and of those enticed to rent such movies based on the cover. It is also the intention of these pages to highlight some of the finer examples from the hey day of this passing era. Maybe, if everything goes well, we will all learn a thing or two about ourselves, life and living. Salud, and enjoy the film. |
